Hirohito

1901-1989

In 1926 the unassuming grandson of Emperor Meiji, succeeded to the throne. He adopted Showa or "enlightened peace" as the official philosophy for his reign, but when General Baron Tanaka Giichi became prime minister in 1927, he declared the resumption of an aggressive policy toward China which ended in 1945 when he made an unparalleled radio broadcast announcing Japan's unconditional surrender to the Allies. Under Allied occupation, Hirohito retained the throne, but the new constitution of 1946 made him “symbol of the state and of the unity of the people,”. His reign was the longest and one of the most turbulent in Japan's history.
