John
Barth ( Cambridge , 27 May 1930 ) is a writer, American author of novels and
short stories, known for its influence on literary currents and postmodern
metafiction.
Born in Cambridge, Maryland, studied at art school "Julliard" in New York,
before service, for all ' Johns Hopkins University . It was also a professor at
Pennsylvania State University (1953-1965), at SUNY Buffalo (1965-1973) and
Boston University . He retired from teaching in 1995.
Barth began his career as a writer in 1956 with The Floating Opera , which is
followed by End of the road in 1958. In these two short novels, the author
tackles controversial issues such as suicide and abortion. The 1960 is the year
of publication of the grower of Maryland , epic-satire that deals with the theme
of the colonization of Maryland and is based on the life of a poet, Ebenezer
Cook , who wrote a poem with the same title. The work is broad, structured and
dispersed, full of digressions and stories in the stories. The protagonist,
Ebenezer Cook in fact, is similar to an innocent Candide by Voltaire that aims
to write an epic-heroic but, being disillusioned, eventually compose a biting
satire.
His later works are Giles goat-boy and the house of joy . With Chimera wins in
1973 the National Book Award for fiction ex aequo with Augustus of John Williams
.
Barth took part in the theoretical discussion about the decline in the
importance of the novel as a literary form, on this topic has also published an
essay entitled The literature of exhaustion , comparable to death of the author
of Roland Barthes.
